Did you know that February is National Children's Dental Health Month? According to the ADA, American Dental Association, along with the ADA Foundation, their campaign slogan for February 2017 is "Choose Tap Water for a Sparkling Smile."

The ADA also provides the history of National Children's Dental Health Month. It began as a one-day event in Cleveland OH on February 3,1941, something more the people of the CLE and surrounding areas can be proud of. The ADA held the first national observance of Children's Dental Health Day on February 8, 1949, this single day observance became a weeklong event in 1955 and in 1981 it was extended to a month-long observance know as National Children's Dental Health Month. Developing healthy habits early on will help create a healthy mouth and gums that last a lifetime.

Tips for Optimal Oral Health

Drinking water instead of sugary drinks and soda has always been a philosophy here at Najem & Lehky Orthodontics. Sodas and sports drinks have a lot of sugar and acid in them that can damages the enamel on teeth and cause cavities. When patients are wearing braces, they can create nooks and crannies for the sugar to get trapped in. To combat this, we provide our patients with their very own Brushing Kit,with a Najem & Lehky water bottle to remind them of the importance of drinking water for their body health and the health of their teeth.

Below you'll find a list of common beverages and their acidity levels for your reference:

  • Highly Acidic Beverages include: Soft Drinks, Diet Soft Drinks, Sports Energy Drinks. Drink these beverages rarely.
  • Medium Acidic Beverages include: Juices. Drink these beverages occasionally.
  • Low Acidic Beverages include: Water and Milk. Feel free to drink these beverages often.

When Should My Child See an Orthodontist?

Drs. Najem & Lehky Brushing Kit

As parents you may be asking yourself, "When should I get my child in for an Orthodontic Evaluation?" The AAO, American Association of Orthodontists, says no later than age 7. Most people think of orthodontics as something for pre-teen and teenagers or adults, but there are several good reason for the evaluation to happen sooner. Drs. Najem and Lehky can spot issues during the examination in relation to the jaw growth and arch length that if corrected early can eliminate more serious problems in future years. We may see a young child and decide just to observe the growth and development and treat when more permanent teeth are present. As a rule of thumb, we would much rather see them and say they aren't ready, than to see them at 16 and wish we could have done something earlier. The initial visit and examination here at Najem & Lehky Orthodontics is complimentary.

We have also partnered with Crest & Oral-B in their "Embrace-It!" Ortho Essential program to provide all our of patients at the time of banding with the Oral-B Genius toothbrush which offers Position Detection thru Bluetooth technology along with other tools necessary to maintain good oral health during and after orthodontic care.
