At the office of Drs. Najem & Lehky, we're proud to offer comprehensive orthodontic treatment to patients throughout Cortland, Fairlawn, and Akron, OH areas. One of one of our most popular treatments for patients looking to revitalize their smile is Invisalign. Invisalign is an exciting orthodontic alternative to braces that uses clear, removable aligners to straighten teeth, offering a virtually invisible treatment option. While for the most part Invisalign is comfortable and convenient, life with Invisalign can still take some getting used to. As your comprehensive Fairlawn orthodontist, we're here to tell you a few things you should know about adjusting to life with Invisalign.

What to Expect When Getting Invisalign Treatment

Invisalign is one of the most convenient orthodontic treatments available – but as with any orthodontic treatment, it still requires you to make some important adjustments. Life with Invisalign may be more convenient than life with braces, but here are a few things you'll need to get used to when getting Invisalign clear aligner treatment:

  • You Really Do Need To Wear Aligners All the Time: Invisalign aligners are removable, which is convenient for activities like eating, brushing your teeth, and flossing – but this comes with a catch. You aligners only work while they're in, so you'll need to wear your aligners as much as possible to get the most out of your treatment. Without at least 20-22 hours of wear per day, you risk impairing the efficacy of your treatment, so be sure to wear your aligners as diligently as possible.
  • You'll Be Doing a Lot of Brushing: In order to keep your teeth and aligners clean and minimize the risk of dental decay, it's critical to clean your aligners every time you take them out and brush your teeth thoroughly before putting aligners back in. That means that between your teeth and aligners, you'll be doing a lot of brushing – but it's a small price to pay for healthy teeth.
  • Expect an Adjustment Period for New Aligners: Most patients will experience a bit of an "adjustment period" when they first get Invisalign and anytime they switch to a new set of aligners. During this period, you may notice a slight lisp when you speak, and you may feel some soreness or discomfort in your mouth. Don't worry, though: this is normal, and it should fade within a few days.
