before and after teeth whitening

After completing treatment, whether with braces or Invisalign, many of our patients want to have their teeth whitened. After all, it’s never a bad idea to fine-tune your new straight smile so you can look your absolute best! We’ve been getting tons of questions about charcoal teeth whitening, which involves brushing the teeth with an activated charcoal mixture that looks like a pitch-black, fine powder.

We don’t recommend buying into this trend, until more studies are done to prove its safety and effectiveness. Learn more about why charcoal methods may not be the best for teeth below.

Is Charcoal Safe For Teeth?

Companies that sell charcoal whitening powders claim that charcoal can effectively remove bacteria, toxins, and stains from the surfaces of teeth, to leave the teeth whiter and brighter. But before you rush out to buy activated charcoal, you should know that this teeth whitening method is not endorsed by the American Dental Association. An ADA spokesperson recently stated that the organization has not yet evaluated or accepted any charcoal teeth whitening products.

In addition to the non-approval by the ADA, most dental professionals warn that the abrasiveness of charcoal can wear away the protective enamel on teeth. When the enamel on the teeth wears thin, the inner tooth layer called dentin begins to show through. And since dentin is a yellowish-brownish color, your teeth may end up looking yellow or stained with prolonged charcoal use, which would be completely counterproductive.

In short, the activated charcoal whitening method may not be all it’s cracked up to be! In our opinion, it’s just not a tooth whitening method to try as there’s just too much risk involved. If you want to improve your smile with teeth whitening, it’s best to visit a dentist that offers professional whitening that’s safe to use. Today, many dentists offer both in-office and at-home teeth whitening that’s affordable, safe and effective.
