TMJ

Our Fairlawn and Cortland, OH orthodontists not only provide orthodontic treatments like braces and Invisalign, but Dr. Najem and Dr. Lehky also specialize in treatment for the "Temporomandibular Joint", often shortened to TMJ and referred to as the "jaw joint". This joint, where the opening and closing movements of the jaw occur, is often a source of recurring pain in our patients. Common symptoms that TMJ patients encounter include:

  • Headaches
  • Joints make crunching or popping sounds
  • Recurring incidents of jaw locking (opened or closed)
  • Pain toward the front of the ear
  • Pain or tightness in the sides of the face

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms or believe you could benefit from TMJ treatment, we are here to assist you. Drs. Najem and Lehky offer a TMJ exam to evaluate the joint tissue in the "hinge" of the jaw. Serious TMJ patients may experience the following possible problems:

  • Swelling
  • Deterioration of the joint tissue
  • Damaged joint tissue

For most cases of TMJ, pain relievers and cold compresses may provide temporary relief. However, for more serious cases of TMJ we recommend some alternative treatments such as:

  • A mouth guard to relieve teeth grinding at night
  • Orthodontic appliances or retainers that alleviate discomfort or redirect positioning of the jaw joint

The most severe cases of TMJ may require invasive procedures like orthognathic (jaw) surgery, in which case we will work with you to ensure that you receive the care you need.
